Disney World’s Port Orleans Riverside Review: Experience After a Flight Delay?

We arrived at Disney World’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort in February 2026 during a cold spell. So cold, that it set off the sprinklers at the Orlando airport control tower and sent us in circles before we finally arrived well after dark. With three tired, hungry, disappointed kids, that immediately tested the resort’s customer service and ease of navigation.

Here are three things that helped us quickly get in the Disney spirit. Thanks to the Disney World Experience app, I checked us in when we landed and had our room number when we arrived. We immediately went to guest services and asked that they take us and our luggage to our room by golf cart. Then we headed back to the dining hall for dinner and hot chocolate.

The Verdict: Port Orleans Riverside is an excellent top-tier moderate category resort for families seeking a peaceful retreat after park (or travel) chaos. The price is right and the value and experience is excellent.

We stayed at this resort on our first trip to Disney World and loved it, so we came back. But, we now have three experiences and more tips for you.

Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort was our base camp for a stress-free week hitting Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, EPCOT and the brand-new Universal Epic Universe—strategy guides for those parks coming soon.

I. Resort Layout & Aesthetic: Alligator Bayou vs. Magnolia Bend

Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort is a large moderate resort on the Disney World property. And while it’s beautiful and we love it, it’s a confusing web of twists and turns particularly challenging your first night in the dark. So, grab a few maps and embrace the golf carts, especially when you have luggage or grumpy little ones.

Let’s talk resort layout and aesthetic.

Resort Layout

The main hall that welcomes you is warm and friendly, and where you’ll find the main dining hall, another restaurant, a pub, an excellent gift shop and arcade. Plus, guest services to get maps of the resort and parks, mail you ordered and answers to your questions. You might also bump into a Disney character or two.

Winding through the resort is the Sassagoula River that connects to Disney Springs by water taxi. Access the taxi at the dock near the arcade. We highly recommend this on a slow day.

Immediately across the bridge from the main hall is Ol’ Man Island, where you’ll find the main pool, playground, hammocks and fishing hole. For non-park days, enjoy resort activities, like campfires and movies, on the island.

Beyond Ol’ Man Island, the resort splits into two distinct areas: Alligator Bayou and Magnolia Bend.

Alligator Bayou features charming two-storey cottages in a rustic, woodsy setting. Magnolia Bend hosts stately white-column mansions amidst manicured gardens and gazebos.

The Room

On both trips to Disney World, we stayed in Alligator Bayou. I’ve read that all 5-sleeper rooms are in this area so if you’re booking this room type, chances are high you’ll also be in this area. (I think the Bayou area is more enchanting anyway.)

We found the rooms fairly basic but clean and comfortable. The 5-sleeper bed that folds from the wall is perfect for a child and they always fought over it.

There’s a small table with two chairs near the door, a curtain separating the washroom sink area, which is handy in the morning when getting ready, and a (small) separate room for the tub and toilet. There’s a safe, fridge, coffee maker and large open closet with a shelf, hangars and extra bedding. Beds are comfortable and “Hey Disney” storytelling is great for getting kids to bed after fun at the park.

One disappointment was that TVs don’t include complimentary Disney+ access. We thought this would be a great way to promote this service.

I have come to love the vibe of the external entry doors adding a quiet, neighborhood feel.

II. Dining & Relaxation After Hours

Let’s talk about resort amenities for dining and relaxation.

The food

The Riverside Mill Food Court is rated as one of the best value quick service restaurants in Disney World—very nice if you’re on the quick dining meal plan. You’ll find a variety of options for both taste and price. This includes the basics like burgers and pizza, decent pasta, soups and themed specialty meals that rotate. My favorite was their salmon.

We all loved breakfasts at the resort. The kids went for mickey waffles and I discovered the breakfast bowls. You can also get cereal, parfaits and fresh fruit.

If you purchase a refillable mug, you get access to unlimited refills of fountain drinks, coffee, tea and hot chocolate. We highly recommend.

For treats, also consider the gift shop. You’ll find all sorts of fun ideas, including gifts for those back home.

Pool amenities

Ol’ Man Island Pool

Our kids have so much fun at the Disney Port Orleans Riverside Resort Ol’ Man Island pool, and so do us adults. Let me tell you why!

This main pool is large, with mixed depths and plenty of space for kids to have fun. It’s designed like an abandoned sawmill with bridges, waterside and rustic water features. We appreciated life jackets and lifeguards so the adults could relax. The hot tub is large as well.

For adults, there are plenty of pool loungers around the pool and tables with umbrellas near the pool bar. If you want a drink or snack, the bar is raised so you can still keep an eye on your kiddos. The building with the bar has large washrooms and change rooms. Towels are restocked regularly.

If you prefer a quiet pool, the resort has five throughout the property. These are very convenient and much quieter, and have laundry services nearby. However, they’re all one depth so not as ideal for little ones.

Water taxi to Disney Springs

River taxi to Disney Springs

We highly recommend taking the water taxi from Port Orleans Riverside Resort to Disney Springs. It’s a cost-effective way to add an activity to a slow day or to take in some great shopping and eating.

Here are our favorite family-friendly spots in Disney Springs:

  • Quick dining: The Polite Pig for the only table service restaurant on the quick dining plan, offering excellent value and a variety of food options.
  • Sit down dining: Splitsville Dining Room for fresh sushi and other excellent options at a reasonable price.
  • Snacks: Disney’s Candy Cauldron for candy apples and bagged treats you can spend your quick service snack points on.
  • Gift shop: World of Disney is massive and an excellent stop for last-minute treasure hunting. (Note: Some items are only available at specific shops in specific parks. If you see something you love, purchase it and have it delivered to your resort to avoid carrying it around all day.)

III. Transportation Reality Check

The truth about the busses: How smooth is the bus to and from Disney World parks to Port Orleans Riverside Resort?

It depends. On timing, which stop you hope to get on or off at and if you’re hauling a stroller.

Here’s my recommendation. In the morning, ideally get on the bus at the West Depot or North Depot. These are the first bus stops with empty busses coming back from the park.

The bus runs clockwise, so the bus fills up as it continues, with the last stop at South Depot next to the lobby. So, this is the worst place to get on in the morning. That said, we did this a few times and managed to pack in (but standing room only).

If you’re heading to the park in mid-morning or later, you’ll be fine getting on at any depot.

Plan for a 30-minute ride to most of the parks. Sometimes busses stacked up, with a few arriving back-to-back or delayed, but this was rarely an issue when we were there.

Summary

Based on our experience staying at Disney World’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort three times, we highly recommend it, with some tips to keep in mind.

  • Check-in process: Use the app to check in before you arrive and have guest services take you and your luggage to your room by golf cart.
  • Catch the park bus at the West Depot: This is the first bus stop for busses returning empty from the parks and will ensure you get a seat.
  • Enjoy the amenities: This charming resort offers more than a comfortable room. Enjoy the pools, manicured grounds, refillable coffee and hot chocolate in the dining hall, and browsing the impressive gift shop.
  • Take the water taxi: This is a cost-effective way to spend a few hours and access excellent shopping and dining options. You can also stop at Port Orleans French Quarter and enjoy their pool, restaurant or a drink at Scat Cat Lounge.
  • Pack comfortable shoes: Just like the parks, you’ll be walking to get anywhere in this resort. Pack comfortable shoes and enjoy the view.
